Yoga

Yoga is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines aimed at controlling and stilling the body & mind and recognizing the detached “witness consciousness” as untouched by the activities of the mind and mundane suffering.

The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning “to yoke,” or “to unite”. The practice aims to create a union between body, mind and spirit, as well as between the individual self and universal consciousness. Such a union tends to neutralize ego-driven thoughts and behaviors, creating a sense of spiritual awakening.

Yoga manifests itself as four major paths, i.e. Karma Yoga (performing an action without any expectation -a selfless action), Bhakti Yoga (devotional approach towards GOD – praying, chanting or glorifying GOD’s name through bhajans or messages), Raja Yoga (set of various techniques to turn physical & mental energy into spiritual energy) and Jnana Yoga (includes Shravana (listening to the teachings or reading scriptures such as Vedas or Puranas), Manana ( reflection on the teachings), Nididhyasana – a meditation on the nature of truth). In Karma Yoga the active aspect of mind is involved; in Bhakti Yoga, the emotional aspect; in Raja Yoga, the mystical aspect; in Jnana Yoga, the intellectual aspect.
